The Bike Chain was our project carried out from 2021-2022 funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Now in 2023, and running until 2025, we have started the Bike Chain 2.0, funded by the Principality Community Foundation Wales.
There are so many different barriers that prevent people from cycling. Some are gendered; people grow up in families where girls and women are not encouraged to cycle. Or the culture of toxic masculinity, transphobia and racism that pervades cycling, from the highest echelons of professional sports to the bullies outside school gates, is off putting. Some are economic; some people simply cannot afford bicycles. Some are more complex; some cities provide little space to cycle safely. And even in those cities where one can ride safe from motor vehicles, trans, queer, disabled, and global majority people may still experience harassment and violence when navigating the outside world.
The Bike Chain is project that seeks to target these barriers at the individual level, in order to build a grassroots community of LGBTQIA+ cyclists.
* If you are interested in building your own bike*
*If you would like to learn to cycle*
*If you have learned to cycle, but would like to gain confidence to cycle independently*
Link up with the chain, and come along for the ride.
